Starla Haney is living what is referred to as the “American Dream.” She went from building tires at the Goodyear plant to becoming a clothing designer. It’s the stuff Shark Tank episodes are made of.

“It all started when I had my first daughter and wanted to dress her up in cute outfits, but everything that was frilly and cute was so expensive,” said Haney. “That’s when I got the idea to start my own line of affordable, fashionable clothing for little girls.

“It was scary at first. I had to find a factory to make my designs, and I didn’t know if it would be a successful or not.”

Initially, she fixed up an old house in Rainsville and used it as her store. Over the past three and a half years, her business has grown, and her husband, Jason, and son, Dylan, built a 1,500-square-foot-store on the same property where the house once resided.

She moved into her new store in March. The grand opening for the new store is Saturday, with her entire inventory marked down 10 percent. The store will also have a Black Friday sale with door-buster sales throughout the day.

Haney named her store Sassy Ruffles Boutique, appropriately, since all of her designs have ruffles, and she said her daughter is definitely sassy.

Her store also offers nearly 60 different hair bows to match the adorable outfits being sold.

“I try to keep things affordable,” Haney said. “Our hair bows start at $1 up to $5 with an assortment of sizes. Most little girl outfits are in the $20 range.”

The store offers a small selection of infant wear and boys attire, featuring Wes & Willie, and ladies clothing sizes small through 3X.

Other items include jewelry, purses and gifts. Everything in the boutique is ready to ship and mail out within 24 business hours of making a purchase, with free shipping in the United States.

The store is located at 795 McCurdy Ave. S. and can also be found online at and on Facebook and Instagram. Haney can be reached by email at: or call 256-640-3423. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sassy Ruffles Boutique has won Best of DeKalb for the past two years.
