Shelby visits DeKalb

Posted: Monday, March 7, 2011 4:23 pm

At a town meeting in DeKalb County on Saturday, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby warned that the nation is "on the road to financial destruction."

Shelby made the comment during a stop at the Little River Canyon Center, part of a series of stops throughout Northeast Alabama. About 80 people turned out for the event despite pouring rain.

If we are on the road to financial destruction, Sen. Shelby was driving the bus when we got on it. As chairman of the Senate Banking Committee during most of the Bush Presidency, Shelby allowed two wars to be fought while giving massive tax cuts to millionaires. Clinton left with the budget showing a surplus, and Bush left with the country facing economic disaster. What was Shelby doing then, except for voting for it all? Shelby also sat and allowed Wachovia Bank from North Carolina to buy Southtrust Bank in Alabama and pay for it with virtually worthless Wachovia stock, wiping out the nesteggs of many Alabamians. He needs to start solving the problem by working with our President and the Democrats to undo the damage he helped cause.

I find it a bitter pill to swallow when our elected officials start talking "doom and gloom" like it is current events. Senator Shelby has been entrenched in the federal government for 25 years. He is just as culpable for the state of our country as any, and more than most. He needs to quit complaining and threatening and get something done. That is HIS jOB. If he doesn't know how, after 25 years, then he needs to step aside and let someone else figure it out. One way may be to actually listen to the constituency who actually HAVE "outside the box" ideas, instead of commiserating with all his current cronies in Washington while everyone's hand is still in the cookie jar. MY PERSONAL finances are just fine, Senator Shelby--YOU get MY TAXPAYER finances in order like I elected you to do...don't just whine about China, or the Middle East, OR the Democrats.
