Snowfall possible tonight, Saturday

Published February 10, 2006

There is another chance for snowfall in DeKalb County during the weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasts Thursday.

According to the NWS, periods of rain are expected for much of tonight, mixing with and changing to snow toward daybreak Saturday.

“We’ve got a significant cold front moving in and a good chance of rain tonight, which we expect to begin changing over [to snow] very late,” Beth Carroll, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Huntsville, said Thursday.

However, she said significant accumulation is not expected.

“The ground is going to be moist and soft from the rain, so accumulation isn’t likely. Our expectations are that if there is any, it will be in the higher elevations on Lookout Mountain or Sand Mountain,” she said.

Carroll said snow most likely would begin after 3 a.m. on Saturday, a day that is expected to be a cloudy and blustery day with a 30 percent chance of measurable snow, highs of 31 to 37 degrees, and northwest winds from 10 to 15 mph.

According to the NWS, there is a chance of occasional snow flurries Saturday night, with lows in the lower 20s.

Sunday is expected to be mostly cloudy and cold, with highs 32 to 38, and Sunday night is expected to be mostly cloudy with lows around 25 and a few snow flurries.

It’s expected to warm slightly on Monday, with highs in the lower 40s. The NWS expects the warming trend to continue throughout the week.

DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency Director Susan Battles said there have been light, early morning snow dustings in areas of DeKalb over the past few days, but nothing significant or dangerous.
