Rain keeps falling, more expected

Published October 12, 2009

It’s no big surprise rain is in the forecast again.

After about 2 inches of rain fell on DeKalb County Monday morning, causing a flash flood warning, there was about a four-hour lull before showers returned to finish out the day.

And it appears DeKalb County won’t see much of a break from the rains until sometime Friday.

“It looks like there’s a chance for rain on and off through Thursday,” said WAFF Meteorologist Jeff Castle. “There may be times when the rain comes down pretty good during that time frame. It looks better for the weekend. We should dry out on Saturday and Sunday.”

Despite some flooding on Monday, no roads in Fort Payne and DeKalb County had to be closed.

“We held pretty well,” said Fort Payne Public Works Director Stanley Byrd. “There was a short period from about 5:30-6:30 a.m. where the drains couldn’t handle it, but other than that, we were in good shape.

“It never did get over the road at Terrapin Hills. It rained pretty hard, but it drained fast. I haven’t seen any damage to speak of.”

DeKalb County Road Department Supervisor Tom Broyles said much the same of the county roads.

“We haven’t had to close anything,” Broyles said. “I’m sure we’ve got some that have some washes in them but nothing to serious that we had to close them.

Broyles said the rain would likely delay work on fixing Sylvania Gap Road that was damaged by rain earlier in the year.

“It will hold us up some on Sylvania Gap Road,” Broyles said. “If we had two or three days, we might could get the excavation part completed and start the construction. With all this rain, it’s been hard to get in a full day.”

The rain has also caused delays in soccer games at the Fort Payne Sports Complex. According to Anita Shankles with the Fort Payne Parks and Recreation Department, most teams are already three and four games behind on the season.

“We had a full day of games scheduled for Saturday, so I don’t know what we are going to do,” Shankles said. “It seems like this happens every other year with rainouts. They are calling for more rain this week. We are in for it.”
