Bald eagle family found

Published May 23, 2008

There is plenty to see each morning outside Jack Everett’s home in the Portobello subdivision in Fort Payne. Lately, however, there’s been a little more.

Each morning for the past four days Everett has watched a pair of baby bald eagles growing in a nest just outside his home.

“Of course, this is the first time, I have ever seen bald eagles in tree near my yard, but they have been a delight to watch,” Everett said

It may be something knew to Everett but wildlife officials say bald eagle sightings are becoming more and more common in DeKalb County.

Brian Roleck, with Auburn University, said the sighting is not that surprising.

“Actually, bald eagles are making a big comeback across the country,” Rolecck said.

The birds can usually be found nesting near water, and because Portebello is near the Fort Payne reservoir the area is an ideal nesting site.

“I don’t know if many people know this but just recently bald eagles were taken off the endangered species list,” Roleck said.

Little River Canyon National Preserve Superintendent John Bundy said he has seen bald eagles from time to time near the canyon mouth.

“There is also a pair that nest on an island on Weiss Lake,” Bundy said. “I definitely wouldn’t call them a common occurrence in this area, but I wouldn’t say that I am that surprised to hear there are being more sightings,” Bundy said.

Dan Green, who works in Fort Payne with the Alabama Forestry Commission, has also seen bald eagles in the area.

“Yes, they have been rare in this area, but I think we are starting more of them now,” Green said.
