DIXIE YOUTH ROUNDUP: Fort Payne falls to Boaz

Published June 29, 2009

A tough game Saturday left the Fort Payne 11-12-year-old baseball all-stars one loss away from elimination.

Wesley Burns finished 2-for-2 with a two-run homer as Boaz downed host Fort Payne 10-0 in the second round of the Dixie Youth District 8 O-Zone Tournament.

Fort Payne fell into the loser’s bracket and was scheduled to face Cherokee National late Monday. The winner earns a bye today and will play again Wednesday night at 8.

Boaz had a bye Monday and will face either the Mountaineers or Rainsville tonight at 8. All three of those teams finished the weekend unbeaten.

Fort Payne opened the tournament with a 7-4 victory over Piedmont on Friday.

“Friday night we played good. We probably played as good as we have the four weeks we’ve been together. We hit well and played well in the field,” Fort Payne coach Neal Ridgeway said.

“Saturday, we just made too many errors. We made a ton of errors … and that’s what got us. When we’re playing [well] we’re as good defensively as anyone in the tournament, but we just weren’t on that day.”

Ridgeway said his team’s plan was to get off to a fast start offensively and rely on its defense. The coach said it was a bad sign when his team hit four line drives in the first inning, only to see three of them caught.

Gage Cash pitched four shutout innings and earned the win. He allowed three hits and struck out two.

Blade Romans doubled for Fort Payne.
