County likely to OK water grant
Published November 23, 2009
The DeKalb County Commission is expected to take additional steps today to bring city water to about 39 families in the southern portion of the county.
County Administrator Matt Sharp said when the commission meets today in regular session, it is expected to authorize Morton and Associates to perform administrative work on a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant. The grant will allow the Collinsville Water System to extend service along County Road 5 and County Road 6. Sharp said the commission is also expected to authorize Ladd Engineering to perform engineering work on the project, which Sharp said would bring city water to 39 families currently dependent on well water systems.
According to a report from the state, water drawn from area wells contains a high concentration of iron that not only affects taste, but also stains clothes, sinks, tubs and toilets, and health officials also found bacterial contamination in nearly 75 percent of the wells tested.
The late Commissioner Brant Craig applied for the grant. The county will provide a $85,700 as a local match.
A new pump station and an upgrade of an existing water line will be necessary, but county officials say the improvements will make it easier to provide service to other households on Lookout Mountain in the future.
