County to discuss senior center policy

Published November 10, 2008

The DeKalb County Commission is expected Wednesday to discuss another policy for senior centers around the county.

According to Administrator Matt Sharp, the policy would ban sales in senior centers and includes all types from Avon to home health equipment and insurance agents.

Sharp said the commission plans to discuss the policy after Council on Aging Director June Brewer sent him a letter from TARCOG requesting the policy.

“This policy has to do with people coming in and putting pressure on people selling things,” Sharp said. “June Brewer wants to enact that policy. The commission wants to discuss it.”

The policy comes after the commission approved rules for those visiting the senior centers in October. The guidelines outline appropriate behavior expected while in attendance at the centers or programs, including maintaining cleanliness and personal hygiene and complying with all safety and security rules.

Prohibited conduct is also listed, including abusive language, behavior threatening to others and intentionally destroying personal or center property. Currently, all those taking part in programs or visiting the centers must sign that they read and understand the new rules.

Re-elected commissioners Ed Nix and Ricky Harcrow will also be sworn into office at 9 a.m. at the Activities Building prior to the 10 a.m. regular meeting on Wednesday. The meeting was postponed because of Veteran’s Day.
