County denied road money
Published March 9, 2010
According to County Engineer Ben Luther, FEMA has denied assistance to DeKalb County to fix roads damaged in late January’s winter weather freeze.
Luther said the news came in a March 3 letter from Gov. Bob Riley.
“As of right now, there is no federal funding available to fix the damage,” Luther said. “We don’t know what’s going to happen.”
On Tuesday, Commissioner Ricky Harcrow said Congressman Robert Aderholt was aware of the rejection by FEMA and an appeal had already been filed.
“Congressman Aderholt said he would take every avenue to see that we get help,” Harcrow said.
Luther said he wasn’t optimistic to begin with and felt the same about the appeal.
“I didn’t expect to get much, if anything, the first time,” Luther said. “I really don’t expect us to get anything this time.”
Luther said the county plans to do the best it can to fix the estimated $7 million in damages on its own.
“We’ll see a bunch of patched roads,” Luther said. “We just don’t have the money or resources to fix a problem this big.”
It is unsure when the county expects to get a decision on the appeal.
The commission also:
• voted to proceed with a partial road vacation of County Road 636.
• agreed transfers of Jody Edmondson from the revenue commission’s reappraisal budget to the revenue commission budget and Tracy Burt from the revenue commission budget to the reappraisal budget.
• approved travel and training for the Rural Transportation Board.
• sent a claim by Wills Creek Village for alleged damage to its breezeway to the county’s insurance company after the county bookmobile ran into it.
• gave permission to County Administrator Matt Sharp to send out bids for a solid waste collection and disposal bid.
