DeKalb Perfect For ‘Year of Small Towns’
Published March 10, 2010
Several years ago, the Alabama Tourism Department decided to take an interesting approach to promoting our state. The idea of celebrating a specific aspect of life in Alabama for an entire year has been effective and has allowed different areas to promote with pride those special things that set them apart from all other places.
From food to art to sports to history, the “year of” promotion has quickly become part of the language throughout Alabama. And, we’re excited about this year’s theme, mainly because it again hits close to home.
This year, Alabama celebrates the “Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns.” It’s a promotion that seems specifically made for Fort Payne and the rest of the small cities and towns throughout DeKalb County.
Fort Payne’s unique downtown, with its quant shopping district, historic Depot Museum, fabulous opera house, traditional DeKalb Theatre, innovative Alabama Walking Park, picturesque City Park and glorious statues of the group Alabama, offers so much for locals and visitors.
But, our uniqueness does not end there.
Rainsville is the perfect picture of a small town, with its critical intersection serving as the meeting place for commerce, tradition and hometown appeal. The city’s new ag center is only a short distance away from some of the best food in Northeast Alabama, along with quality family entertainment.
Each of our communities – Mentone, Collinsville, Ider, Sylvania, Geraldine, Fyffe, Crossville, Henagar, Hammondville, Pine Ridge and Valley Head – have so much to offer that it seems the state had DeKalb County in mind when it selected this year’s theme.
Our hope is our communities will become active in the statewide promotion, creating opportunities for tourism revenue to increase while at the same time sharing a little of what makes us special with others.
