Ambulance service to send care to Iraq

Published November 16, 2009

Two paramedics with the DeKalb Ambulance Service are serving in Iraq, and their co-workers want to send them a little taste of home.

Spc. Riley Shrader, of Henagar, and Sgt. Sue Harris, of Scottsboro, are expected to get care packages soon from their DeKalb County co-workers. According to DAS Chief of Operations Mark Ford, both Alabama National Guardsmen were deployed to Iraq in June. It’s Shrader’s first deployment and Harris’ second.

Ford said Harris is a single mother, whose daughter will be getting married soon. He said Shrader is married with two children.

He said Harris serves as a medic while Shrader drives a truck as their primary missions in Iraq.

“Especially with Sue, she’s torn with her life in the military and her life here,” Ford said. “She has really struggled with her second deployment. Riley’s father-in-law was killed in a car accident, and he’s already been home dealing with that.

“With the holiday season, it’s important we do something for them.”

According to Cynthia Robertson with DAS, CEO Rusty Fowler came up with the idea to send care packages to the troops. The packages consist of socks, reading materials, drink mixes and snacks.

“They do so much to serve us; we wanted to do something for them,” Robertson said.

Ford said Harris has worked for DAS for the past five years while Shrader has been employed there for the past two years.
