VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: GHS, Ider, Fyffe advance

Published October 19, 2009

Geraldine didn’t get everything it came for Saturday, but the Lady Bulldogs did enough to make sure their season would continue.

No. 5 Geraldine won two of three matches and finished second in the Class 2A, Region C high school volleyball tournament at Woodland.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs (46-15) is a sub-state match against No. 8 Hatton on Thursday night at 6 at Geraldine.

The top four teams in each regional advanced. Hatton finished third in the Region D Tournament. Sub-state winners advance to state next week.

Geraldine defeated Horseshoe Bend 25-18, 25-19, 25-9 in the opening round before downing Ider 25-12, 25-21, 25-9 in a semifinal. No. 6 Sand Rock edged Geraldine 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 15-13 in the championship match.

It was Sand Rock’s second win in six tries against Geraldine this year.

“We didn’t pass well most of the day,” Geraldine coach Cristie Brothers said. “It really caught up with us at the end of the day against Sand Rock. They just out-played us when it counted.

“The good thing about it is that we still host sub-state. We’re always better off in front of our home crowd.”

Alanna Smith had 46 kills and 19 blocks for Geraldine. Maura Owens added 22 kills and 12 blocks, and Stephanie Andrews dished out 89 assists.

Kristen White paced the team with 48 good digs. Hannah Painter collected nine aces.

IDER: At Woodland, the Lady Hornets (21-19) finished third in the 2A, Region C tournament.

Ider defeated Lamar County 25-10, 25-15, 25-14 in the first round before falling to Geraldine in a semifinal. Ider downed Fyffe 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 in the third-place match.

The Lady Hornets advanced to sub-state for the first time and will travel to Region D runner-up and No. 3 Lexington on Thursday night at 6.

Julie Corbin put all of her serves in play and closed with 60 assists and eight aces for Ider. Teammate Lynda Ring passed 34 serves to target and 15 good digs. Both made the all-tournament team.

Chelsea Higdon had eight kills in the win over Lamar County. Summer Tarrant added six against Geraldine and 11 more against Fyffe.

FYFFE: At Woodland, the Lady Devils advanced to sub-state with a fourth-place finish in the 2A, Region C tournament and will travel to Region D winner and No. 1 Addison on Thursday night at 6.

Fyffe defeated Oakman in the opening round before dropping matches to Sand Rock and Ider.

PLAINVIEW: At Fairview, the host team downed the No. 7 Lady Bears 13-25, 25-15, 25-18, 17-25, 15-13 in the opening round of the 4A, Region D tournament.

Montana Clark finished with 23 kills and 14 digs for Plainview (32-13), which saw its season come to an end. Anna Graham closed with 19 kills and six blocks.

CROSSVILLE: At Holly Pond, Crossville’s season came to an end with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-11 loss to Holly Pond in the first round of the 3A, Region D Tournament.

Emily Peek (17 digs, six kills), Darby Williamson (10 assists, eight digs), Chelsea Cotton (nine service points) and Jaycie Bobo (two blocks) were team leaders for the Lady Lions.

COLLINSVILLE: At Gaston, Collinsville’s season ended with a loss to Spring Garden in the opening round of the 1A, Region D tournament.
