DeKalb Schools Set Positive Example
Published November 25, 2009
Maybe we can all learn a lesson from the DeKalb County School System. Isn’t that what schools are for in the first place?
With some help from the federal government, 11 of DeKalb’s schools are going green. They will save energy and save a little money in the process, setting a top-notch example for students, parents and communities at the same time.
It’s safe to say we all could a little better for our environment. Whether you agree with the “sky is falling” screams from environmentalists, believe everything is just fine or fall somewhere in the middle – where we believe most of us reside – alternative energy sources, recycling and other environmentally friendly action just makes sense.
DeKalb’s schools will use the nearly $350,000 grant to upgrade lighting. Those upgrades will allow buildings to have the same amount of light with lower wattage. That’s a win for schools, a win for students and teachers and a win for the planet.
The schools taking a green step include Crossville High School, Crossville Elementary School, Henagar Junior High School, Moon Lake Elementary School, Collinsville High School, DeKalb County Technical School and Geraldine, Ider, Plainview, Sylvania and Valley Head schools.
The DeKalb system deserves a round of applause for becoming more energy efficient. It is a move that will help our planet and save taxpayers money at the same time. We challenge the rest of our community to follow that lead.
