Interstate lane closed due to wreck
Published June 24, 2009
An accident involving a transfer truck shut down the southbound lane of Interstate 59 between Fort Payne and Collinsville for most of the day on Wednesday.
Fort Payne Police Commissioner Ron Ogletree said the wreck happened around 5 a.m. when a car allegedly swerved into the path of the transfer truck, forcing the truck off the road. He said it appears when the driver tried to bring the truck back onto the road, it overturned near the 215 mile marker. Ogletree said the driver was taken to DeKalb Regional Medical Center and treated for non life-threatening injuries. Ogletree said officials began detouring traffic from the 218 exit in Fort Payne to U.S. 11, which runs parallel to the I-59 to Collinsville, around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday while various agencies worked to clean up debris from the wreck and transfer the truck’s cargo. The lane re-opened to traffic around 3:35 p.m.
DeKalb Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Leath said that cargo was non-hazardous, but a Hazmat team was called in to clean up 45-50 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled from the truck.
