Alert system fixes made
Published September 10, 2009
The county’s new high-speed, phone emergency notification system –Code Red – has been tweaked in the hopes of providing better service to DeKalb residents.
Emergency Management Director Mike Leath said Thursday that DeKalb residents could now sign up to receive specific types of emergency notifications.
Code Red allows DeKalb County residents to register phone numbers to receive free, automatic notifications to home, business or cell phones in the event of a variety of emergencies or situations. These might include severe thunderstorm, tornado or flash flood warnings.
Leath said the warnings have always been area-specific. In other words, a Collinsville resident signed up for Code Red does not receive a call about a severe thunderstorm warning in Henagar.
However, the system issued alerts about every type of warning.
“We had a lot of people who wanted to use the system, but didn’t necessarily want to get called every time a flash flood warning was issued,” Leath said. “So, now a person can register and instead of getting all of them, only get the warnings they want.”
Leath said Code Red does not call for watches, only actual warnings. He said the system works from the storm-based warning system provided by the National Weather Service.
To register:
• visit www.dekalbcountyal.us and follow the links for Code Red.
• those without Internet access can call EMA at 845-8569 and EMA officials will enter the information into the system.
• Business, churches or other civic groups who deal with a large number of individuals who do not have Internet access or might not be Internet savvy can call EMA. An information sheet will be faxed to the group, and that sheet can be returned by fax.
