Crime up across DeKalb

Published October 5, 2009

Crime in DeKalb County seems to be up overall, according to statistics recently released by the FBI.

The FBI’s most recent Crime in the United States report shows instances of reported violent crime in the county to be at 28 in 2008, up from 15 in 2007.

The report cautions against generalizations, however – as it takes only a sampling – and the 2007 and 2008 reports both fail to include all DeKalb County towns. For example, the 2007 report includes statistics for Fyffe, while the 2008 report does not, and the more recent report includes statistics for Mentone while the earlier report does not.

Individual data is listed in both reports for most other DeKalb towns.

Cursory data shows a slight spike in most reported crime. Robberies are up from four in 2007 to 10 in 2008, aggravated assaults up from 10 in 2007 to 20 in 2008, and property crimes overall up from 150 in 2007 to 296 in 2008. Reported burglaries also showed an increase, jumping from 26 in 2007 to 56 in 2008. There were no reported murders in either year, and the number of forcible rapes declined from one in 2007 to none in 2008.
