Economic Development Efforts Getting Noticed
Published March 24, 2009
Sometimes it helps to get a pat on the back to let you know you are working in the right direction. Recently, we all received that pat when a national magazine ranked Fort Payne and DeKalb County among the best places in the country for economic development.
The good news came from Site Selection magazine’s March online issue.
The Fort Payne micropolitan tied for 65th on the annual list that ranks nearly 700 areas with more than 50,000 people but no large cities as designated by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Many of us may not have Site Selection sitting around on our coffee tables. And, it might be hard to find a copy in a waiting room. But, the magazine matters to people looking to move a business, expand a business or relocate a business.
“ Anytime we can show we rank high among growth in new industry, it is a benefit,” said DeKalb County Economic Development Authority Director Jimmy Durham. “Site locators for new industry look at these, and this will be favorable in recruiting new industry. Site Selection magazine is a prestigious publication that site selectors consider.”
For years, Fort Payne and DeKalb County – with Durham leading the way – have been aggressive in terms of both luring new industry to our area and providing help for existing industry to expand.
Those efforts have continued, despite the most recent economic downturn.
Often, it is difficult to plainly see if our work is paying off. Site Selection has noticed, and others will as well. We are heading down the right path in terms of economic development, positioning ourselves perfectly when our economy rebounds.
