Four are repeat all-state selections

Published March 15, 2010

Four DeKalb County players were repeat selections to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state high school basketball team for the 2009-10 season.

The team was unveiled Sunday.

Three of the repeaters were girls.

Geraldine point guard Kristen White was selected first team in Class 2A for the second straight year, while Fort Payne guard Alicia Williams in 5A and Crossville swingman Emily Peek in 3A earned second-team nods after doing the same in 2008-09.

The fourth repeat selection was Fyffe forward Jesse Martin, who was an honorable-mention selection in 2A boys for the second straight year.

Ider center Kayla Beaty earned a second-team nod in 2A girls. Sylvania guard Donavan Dalton and Crossville forward Justin Mayo both were honorable mention picks for 3A boys.

Three Jackson County players also earned all-state recognition.

North Sand Mountain swingman Chelsea Ellison was a second-team pick in 2A girls.

Section forward Clint Ryan was a first-team selection in 2A boys, while teammate Chance McCarver, a guard, received an honorable-mention nod.

The all-state recognition was just the latest honor for White, who was previously selected Area 12 MVP and DeKalb County MVP by coaches in the county school system. She was also a member of the Sand Mountain Super Six.

White averaged 18.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and three assists per game in 2009-10. Geraldine was 23-8.

Williams, who led Fort Payne to a 29-3 showing, finished at 16.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.3 steals. Peek closed at 14.2 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

Martin helped Fyffe compile a 21-8 mark. He contributed 12.5 points, 12.1 boards, 1.7 assists and 2.0 blocks.

Beaty’s Lady Hornets closed at 20-7. She averaged 10.9 points, 12.3 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and 3.7 steals.

Dalton finished at 16.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists for the Rams, who were 20-12. Mayo contributed 15.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals for the Lions, who went 16-9.

Ellison’s Lady Herd finished 28-6. She averaged 16.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

Ryan contributed 20.4 points and 11 rebounds for a 22-4 Section squad. McCarver closed at 21.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists.
