Town magistrate hearing postponed

Published November 18, 2009

A fired Sylvania town employee will wait a little longer for her personnel hearing.

Sylvania Mayor Mitch Dendy said Wednesday that a hearing for former town magistrate Debbie Lester has been postponed until a later date, at the request of Lester’s attorney.

A personnel hearing for Lester had been scheduled for Tuesday. Dendy said this is the fourth time the hearing has been postponed, and the date for the new hearing hasn’t been set.

The Sylvania Town Council voted in September to fire Lester from her position as town magistrate, with council members Tony Goolesby and Chris Owens to vote against the move.

Dendy earlier said the vote was actually a ratification of a unilateral action he had taken, when he fired Lester from her job for “poor work performance.”

For now, Dendy said Sylvania is without a magistrate.
