Croft leads DeKalb picks to ASWA team

Published June 8, 2009

Jacob Croft is emerging as a dominant presence on the baseball field for Sylvania High School, and the bad news for Ram opponents is he still has two seasons to play.

The sophomore leads a contingent of eight DeKalb County players selected to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state team for 2009.

Croft was selected Class 3A Pitcher of the Year and MVP after leading the Rams to a 22-15 record and state quarterfinal berth. He finished 9-2 with three saves and a 0.51 earned run average. In 69 innings, he allowed 22 hits, eight earned runs and 44 walks and struck out 150.

Croft played shortstop when he didn’t pitch and hit .527 with 19 doubles, one triple, three homers and 35 RBIs.

Croft was also selected to the All-State Super Team, which honors the 10 best players in the state, regardless of class.

Fort Payne pitcher Slade Smith in 5A, Sylvania outfielder Colt Buttram in 3A and Ider first baseman Johnny Elkins in 2A were also first-team picks. Fort Payne’s Kyle Conkle, Plainview’s Dana Wright and Gabe Graham, and Fyffe’s Jesse Townsel were honorable mention selections.

Smith, a first-team pick for the second straight season, finished 7-1 with a 1.77 earned run average. In 56 innings, he allowed 32 hits, 11 earned runs and 19 walks and fanned 91.

Buttram batted .448 with 12 doubles, four homers and 49 RBIs.

Elkins hit .610 with six doubles, one triple, three homers and 27 RBIs.

Conkle was selected honorable mention at first base. He batted .372 with seven doubles, two triples, two homers and 26 RBIs.

Wright earned an HM nod at utility player in 4A. He batted .394 with nine doubles, one homer and 29 RBIs. On the mound, he closed 8-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 64 innings.

Graham was an HM pitcher. He finished 7-4 with a 1.36 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 77 innings.

Townsel received an HM nod at shortstop in 2A. He batted .500 with nine doubles, two homers and 20 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .557.
