We Should Stay Mindful of Nature’s Fury

Published September 23, 2009

Thankfully, we have been spared the loss of life and the severe property damage caused this week as heavy rains continue to pound the Southeast. It is heart-breaking to read reports and see the images of tragedy and loss. Our prayers are with our Georgia neighbors and our fellow Alabamians who have been so traumatically impacted.

Certainly, we have seen our share of rising waters and destruction. Towns people in Valley Head are saddled with the damage to its city hall and police department after a creek swelled from its banks, forcing water into the buildings.

Despite Valley Head’s damage, we were lucky. However, we should always remain cautious about the power of Mother Nature.

We are lucky to be surrounded by such beauty in DeKalb County. And, many times we have dodged bullets in terms of significant disasters. That should not force our guard down. Our mountains, our falls, our rivers, our valleys, our creeks and our streams add to the appeal of our area for so many. Those things also can lead to deeper disasters should they come.

Mike Leath and the DeKalb County EMA were quickly on the scene in Valley Head and work tirelessly to comb the county in search of trouble. We appreciate their efforts.

They continue to remind us to stay in tune with our surroundings when nature strikes.
