Local nursing student takes crack at modeling

Fort Payne native Nicolas McAbee is a nursing student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, but he recently took his turn at modeling.
McAbee, 21, was given the chance to appear in a photo published in Southern Living magazine.
“I have a friend and her aunt does photo set-up for different magazines and needed some people for a dinner party scene,” McAbee said.
McAbee traveled to a home in Homewood for the shoot, which lasted a little while.
“We were there for maybe three or four hours,” McAbee said. “They would take shots and then look at them. We took shots from different positions. They would work on lighting and other things. It took a while.”
McAbee said he wasn’t sure if the picture would be published until he got the call that it had.
The picture was published in Southern Living’s Easy Entertaining.
“I thought ‘Oh my gosh’ that’s me,” McAbee said. “It was weird to see my picture in a national magazine.”
“It was a really amazing experience to be in a magazine,” McAbee said. “It was exciting to get to do something like that.”
But, McAbee said it was a one-time thing.
“I’m not really interested in modeling, but it was a great experience to have,” McAbee said.
McAbee will graduate from the UAB School of Nursing in May.
He said he plans to remain in Birmingham for a few years.
“I want to go back and get my CRNP [certified registered nurse practitioner license],” McAbee said. “I definitely want to work in Alabama.”
