FBI joins explosion investigation

Published February 14, 2008

The FBI is now involved in an investigation involving an explosion that destroyed a Kilpatrick couples’ mailbox more than a week ago.

DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris also said Thursday authorities were questioning suspects.

He didn’t have a motive and wouldn’t release any of the suspect’s names.

“All I can say at this time is that we are questioning everyone, and still believe that it could have possibly been a pipe bomb that destroyed the mailbox,” Harris said. “But if it wasn’t, we are pretty sure it was some type of homemade device.”

Harris said the ABI,and the ATF bomb squad continue to canvas the area and talk to neighbors. “We do have the FBI helping us because the of the seriousness of the case.”

Calls to David Hyche, with the ATF, were not immediately returned Thursday.

“All of the materials have been sent to the ATF crime lab and we have canvassed the whole neighborhood, interviewed several families, and are just investigating the evidence we do have,” Harris said.

The explosion happened at a home on County Road 124.
