Burglars targeting churches

Published December 9, 2009

DeKalb County investigators are working to solve a series of burglaries that targeted area churches.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris said the burglaries began near the end of November. He said burglars have struck five different churches across the county so far – in Kilpatrick, Crossville, Powell, Fyffe and Cartersville.

He said the burglars have mainly taken sound and electronic equipment. Harris said a “large number” of home burglaries have recently been reported as well.

“These kinds of incidents, especially in homes, are common around the holidays,” Harris said. “Burglars know that people have done Christmas shopping, buying electronics and other expensive things and are probably storing them in their homes.

“This kind of thing happens every year, but when you factor in the slow economy, we see even more of it.”

He said he encourages DeKalb residents to take extra precautions to keep their homes safe.

“We also want to encourage people to be on the lookout around their churches,” he said. “If anyone notices anything unusual or suspicious, they should contact their local police department. We are investigating the church burglaries that have been reported, and will release more information as it becomes available.”
