Trees can be recycled at DeKalb Lake

Published December 26, 2009

After the holidays comes the task of taking down the tree, and most people dump their tree on the curb for the garbage men.

This year, donate your live tree for a good cause: fishing.

DeKalb County Lake in Sylvania is taking live trees, and the trees will be used as fish beds to help out fishermen.

DeKalb Lake Manager Lee Biddle said he, with the help of some local fishermen, would put blocks onto the trees and sink them into the lake. “It allows the fish a place to hide and grow, but also helps people to catch more fish.”

Biddle said the smaller fish will hole up inside the trees and the bigger fish will hang out around the outside of the trees.

“It does make it easier for people to fish, and it helps to keep the fish population down,” Biddle said. He said they received around 200 trees last year, with a lot of them left over from places like Wal-Mart and Pedal Pushers.

“We will take live trees as long as people want to bring them,” Biddle said. “The condition of the tree doesn’t really matter, but it does need to be free of debris.”

Biddle said anyone wanting to bring a tree to DeKalb Lake should call before coming.

“We should be around, but for some reason should we have to leave, we’d just like for people to know we are here before they make the drive,” Biddle said. The lake is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The number to DeKalb Lake is 657-1300.
