Man killed in wreck

Published June 1, 2009

A DeKalb County man was killed early Sunday morning in a car accident after hitting a tree.

According to DeKalb Ambulance Service Chief of Operations Mark Ford, Marine Lance Cpl. Phillip Cody McMullins was partially ejected through the windshield of his pickup truck when it hit a tree and landed upside down in a ditch.

“It was a lengthy extraction because the car was on the roof,” Ford said. “It landed in a ditch which, in essence, finished collapsing part of the roof, and the Collinsville Rescue Squad had to be extremely careful with the extraction because his entrapment was so severe.”

McMullins was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he was pronounced brain dead at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

According to reports by his mother, Debra Hood, McMullins, because he was an organ donor, was kept alive on a ventilator to allow doctors to harvest his organs, which they did Monday morning.

McMullins donated several of his major organs including his heart and kidneys.

“All of the recipients are from Alabama,” Hood said. “There is a 44-year-old man living with my son’s heart. It’s absolutely amazing.”

McMullins would have left this Saturday to travel to Kentucky for annual training and was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan next spring.

McMullins graduated as salutatorian from Collinsville High School and later enlisted as a Marine reservist.

Hood said her son will receive a full honor military funeral. Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m.
