I-59 traffic to expect changes

Published November 11, 2009

Motorists traveling Interstate-59 south of DeKalb County may soon be impacted by ongoing highway construction projects in the area.

According to Alabama Department of Transportation Division 1 Engineer Johnny Harris, northbound traffic along I-59 near the Noccalula Falls interchange will soon be diverted to one side of the southbound lane.

Also, northbound traffic will no longer be able to use the Noccalula Falls interchange – this means northbound traffic near Gadsden would have to use either the Attalla interchange or I-759, Harris said. The next northbound interchange after Noccalula Falls is in Collinsville.

Harris said the lane and interchange closures are so road crews can “rehabilitate” sections of the interstate by replacing damaged slabs that have become extremely rough for drivers.

He said he expects the closures to go into effect sometime just after Thanksgiving, and said once the repairs on the southbound lane are completed – which he anticipates will take about a year – the closure situation would reverse and the southbound lane and interchange would be temporarily closed to traffic.
