Fort Payne band to add beat

Published November 18, 2009

The Fort Payne City school board is expected to approve an instructor to add a little more beat in the high school band program.

Superintendent Jimmy Cunningham said he plans to recommend the board hire Tab Brown to be the winter drum instructor for a new competitive winter drum line.

“This will be the first year we have had this,” Cunningham said. “It’s similar to what we did with the band rifle guard we put together last year, but it will be a competing drum line.”

Fort Payne band director Chris Hagler said he’s excited about the chance of adding the competitive drum line.

“This year will be a training year,” Hagler said. “Eventually we will begin competing on the same circuit as the winter guard. It will be an intensive, intricate drum design on a basketball court. When we get to the competitive level, there will be a lot of movement.”

If hired, Brown will head up the training for the drum line. Hagler said Brown was the drum captain while attending Jacksonville State University and taught at Sprit Drum and Bugle Corps. Brown has most recently been the drum instructor at several large high schools in Atlanta.

“He’s got so much experience,” Hagler said. He’s a gold mine.”

Hagler said the winter drum line would improve the play of the overall band. He said plans are to have the winter drum line perform at Becky’s Big Band Burger Bash and at some home basketball games this season.

“This was one of the plans I had when I interviewed,” Hagler said. “I’m just trying to follow through with the plan.”

The board will meet today at 6 p.m. at the central office.
