Local legend to head up Boom Days

Published July 1, 2009

A local field hand turned Country Music Hall of Famer will head up the annual Boom Days festival.

Henagar-native Charlie Louvin will perform as the main act on Sept. 17 in the Keynote Concert at the Fort Payne City Auditorium.

Louvin is best known for hits “I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby,” “You’re Running Wild,” “Cash on the Barrelhead” and “Knoxville Girl” that he recorded with his brother, Ira.

The Louvin Brothers toured with the young and not-yet-famous Elvis Presley in 1955.

A Louvin Brothers tribute album was released in 2003, featuring artists James Taylor, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash, among several others.

The Sullivan Family, specializing in gospel and bluegrass for the last 50 years, will open for Louvin.

Boom Days will feature many of the same attractions as last year, including a 5K run, pet parade, skateboard expo, the Wheels of Time car show and much more.

Boom Days Festival Committee member Collins Kirby said a complete lineup of performers would be available at the beginning of next week.

“We’ve got a great musical lineup this year,” Kirby said. “All of the outdoor concerts are going to be extraordinary.”

This year will feature two new attractions: the New Harmonies Smithsonian Exhibit and the DC Gas Barbeque Bash.

“It’s a very complex museum exhibit of the history of music in America,” Kirby said. “It’s divided into types of music and highlights individuals as well.”

Kirby said the exhibit will include history of music in Alabama and Northeast Alabama.

“We were lucky to be chosen, but on the other hand we have a very rich heritage,” Kirby said. “Everyone is encouraged to attend the exhibit because it will only be here for a little less than a month.”

The DC Barbeque Bash will be a cook-off to see exactly who has the best barbeque in the area.

“This is the first year for the bash,” Kirby said.

Kirby said more details on Boom Days festivities and music will be released in the coming weeks.
