Silly Bandz become serious business
Published November 21, 2009
Kids everywhere are jumping on the wagon of the latest craze in fashion: Silly Bandz.
Silly Bandz are made from silicone and die-molded in many different shapes and colors.
Wishing Well Owner Sharon Watts said the item is very popular.
“We sell a ton of them,” Watts said. “The kids just absolutely love them.”
Watts said children are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new Holiday set of Silly Bandz.
“I’ve ordered the Holiday set,” Watts said. “They should be here soon.”
Silly Bandz are available in five different sets: Pets, Zoo, Sea, Dinosaurs and Basic.
Each pack contains 24 of the fun shapes for about $5 each.
What makes the bands unique is they return to their shape after being used.
But, they can be used for more than just bracelets.
Austin Blackstock, a student at Williams Avenue Elementary School, said there are several uses for the bands.
“They can be worn as bracelets, anklets and rings,” Blackstock said. “They can be used to hold things together, as hair bands and can be made into a rubber band ball.”
Blackstock owns more than 100 Silly Bandz and has created his own uses.
“I made up a trick called the life cycle,” Blackstock said. “I can do a spider web, a spider and then a dead spider.”
Laci Blankenship, Sydney Ford, Harley Tate and Macie Frasier, also students as Williams Avenue, said Silly Bandz are fun for collecting and trading.
Ford said sometimes she will trade with friends, and Frasier said almost all of her friends have them.
Blankenship and Tate both love all the different shapes the bands come in.
Blackstock said some sets are more popular than others.
“I see more of the Basic, Zoo and Dinosaurs sets,” Blackstock said. “All of my friends really like those.”
Silly Bandz are available in Fort Payne at the Wishing Well, Cranberry Corner and Hibbett Sporting Goods.
