Water project grant awarded
Published September 30, 2009
The Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments on Tuesday announced receipt of a $200,000 grant for development of a geographical information system pertaining to municipal water systems in DeKalb and Jackson counties.
The Appalachian Regional Commission will award a $100,000 grant for the project, and contributions from local governments, combined with in-house TARCOG funds, will bring the total funding level to $200,000.
The TARCOG project will survey and compile data on the water system infrastructure of seven individual water systems in DeKalb County, including Collinsville Water Works, Crossville Water Board, Fort Payne Water Works Board, Water Works Board of the Town of Mentone, Northeast Alabama Water System, Sand Mountain Water Authority, and the Valley Head Water Board. The project will also target 10 individual water systems in Jackson County.
Overall, the project aims to map the water infrastructure of the entire Appalachian region in Alabama and will include all public water infrastructure, including distribution lines, control valves, pumping stations and fire hydrants. Once completed, data from the project will be used to attempt to enhance and improve water system infrastructures.
“This is great news that the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Alabama Association of Regional Councils have chosen to invest in DeKalb and Jackson Counties,” said Congressman Robert Aderholt. “This funding will make sure that our municipal water systems are operating in an efficient manner. Expanding water and sewer capacity is vital to attracting new businesses and building residential development.”
