Click It or Ticket starts Monday

Published May 15, 2009

Several DeKalb County police departments, including Powell, Rainsville, Mentone and Fort Payne, will take part in a Click It or Ticket campaign that will start Monday and run through May 31.

“We will be looking for people who aren’t wearing seatbelts and we’ll also be looking for other violations,” Powell Police Chief Steve Dutton said.

Rainsville Police Chief Roger Byrd said his department would also participate in the program.

“We’ll have extra officers out patrolling the city,” Byrd said.

Currently, a seatbelt violation would set a motorist back $10.

“I think it is $25 if someone chooses to go to court and the ticket is upheld,” Dutton said. “If they don’t go to court, it’s $10.”

Mentone and several other police departments in the county will also take part in the safety campaign.

“I want to urge drivers to wear their seatbelts and practice safe driving,” Dutton said.

Fort Payne Police Commissioner Ron Ogletree said his department would also have extra patrol during the campaign to ensure drivers are obeying the law.
