Sparks likely to run for governor
Published April 1, 2009
State Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks said Wednesday he plans to hold a series of press conferences that will conclude in Fort Payne on Friday to announce his campaign plans for 2010.
Sparks, a Fort Payne native, said about two weeks ago that he would announce whether he would run for governor or lieutenant governor.
That decision will be revealed at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of the DeKalb County Courthouse after stops in Montgomery, Birmingham and Huntsville.
On Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr. announced he would seek re-election in 2010. Folsom said he’s optimistic about what can be accomplished in the state Senate and wants to continue his role as the Senate’s presiding officer.
Sparks indicated Wednesday afternoon his plans are to run against Congressman Artur Davis for governor. Davis is the only Democrat who has declared a run for the top state seat so far.
“I will not run against Jim Folsom,” said Sparks, who would not elaborate on his statement.
Sparks is currently serving his second term as state agriculture and industries commissioner and cannot serve a third term due to state term limits.
“We feel like now is the time to do it, and we are ready to go,” Sparks said. “We are finalizing our plans as we speak."
A former member of the U.S. Coast Guard Honor Guard, Sparks was elected to the DeKalb County Commission as one of the youngest county commissioners in Alabama at 24.
“Coming back to Fort Payne means a lot to me,” Sparks said. “I started my career in that courthouse. It means a lot to me to come home. It doesn’t matter whether you move to Montgomery or Washington, Fort Payne will always be home. I want to get there and give people my message and my plans for the state.”
