Students Celebrate A Roaring Good Time
Published November 13, 2009
Fort Payne High School English teacher Adam Comeens does things a little differently for his classes.
Two of Comeens 11th-grade classes recently finished reading the popular F. Scott Fitzgerald novel “The Great Gatsby” and after the test, Comeens and his students threw a “Great Gatsby” party complete with black and silver balloons, streamers, music and 1920s style dancing.
“That’s the kind of thing the kids will remember,” Comeens said. “They may not remember the text or the test, but they will remember the “Great Gatsby” party.”
Comeens said another plus is the students are motivated to begin the next novel, which will be John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men.”
During the classroom party, Fort Payne School of Performing Arts owner Misti Romine stopped by to teach the students the Charleston, and a few other steps from the 1920s.
“She taught them dancing relative to the 1920s,” Comeens said. “She did an awesome job and the kids really enjoyed it.”
Comeens said the two junior classes, who recently finished the book were more into the book than past classes.
“I read the book to them,” Comeens said. “I don’t require them to take it home and read it because I feel like other things would take precedent over it. They respond well to me reading it to them.”
Comeens said because of the party, he hopes “The Great Gatsby” will stick with his students.
“I want some of the stuff from the 1920s culture to stick with them,” Comeens said. “The party is something they’ll always remember.”
