Sylvania gets new councilmember

Published December 23, 2009

Emily Wooten was selected as the newest councilmember in Sylvania.

She will fill the rest of Sam Phillips’ time on the council. Phillips recently resigned his seat, citing personal reasons.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the Sylvania Town Council voted 4-1 to appointment Wooten, after Mayor Mitch Dendy recommended her over four other hopefuls. Councilman Tony Goolesby cast the only dissenting vote and said he felt the council was rushing forward too quickly with the decision.

Dendy said he wanted to have someone in place before the New Year. He said he recommended Wooten because she is a lifelong Sylvania resident who he believes “will bring a lot of new, fresh ideas to the table.”

Other applicants were Calvin Deemer, Billie Thomas, Danny Darwin and Bobby Johns.

Wooten, 36, is the daughter of Claude Callaham, who previously served several terms as Sylvania’s mayor and is now a member of the DeKalb County Board of Education.

“My father has always been involved in politics – I’ve grown up around it and it’s just in my blood,” Wooten said. “I sought the position because I see a definite need right now to get someone on the council who will, along with the others, put our community first.”

Wooten said she would work to bring more commercial stores and restaurants to Sylvania.

“I think the council can make that happen if we work together,” she said.

Wooten, a graduate of Sylvania High School, now works as a real property appraiser for the DeKalb County Revenue Commissioner’s Office. She said she plans to run for a full term on the council in the next municipal election.

“I’m really honored to be named to the council,” Wooten said. “There were a lot of other quality applicants who would have done a good job and serve the best interests of the town.”

Dendy said Wooten would be officially sworn into office by DeKalb Sheriff Jimmy Harris during a ceremony Monday at 5 p.m. at Town Hall.
