Suspects indicted in shooting
Published November 24, 2009
Two Flat Rock men were charged Monday on grand jury indictments related to a March shooting that happened during a raccoon hunt.
A DeKalb County grand jury indicted Harold Lefelle Thompson, 50, on the charge of attempted murder. His son, William Joshua Thompson, 20, was indicted on two counts of second-degree assault. Both men remained in jail Tuesday afternoon, Harold Thompson on $25,000 and William Thompson on $17,500.
The indictments relate to an incident that happened on March 4.
According to Sheriff Jimmy Harris, Jerome Higdon, Leon Jones and two teens, all of Jackson County, were raccoon hunting off County Road 146 just north of the Cartersville community near the DeKalb County and Dade County, Ga. line.
Harris said the Thompsons, who were also armed, confronted the hunting group.
Harris said gunfire was exchanged between the parties. Higdon was shot in the shoulder and Harold Thompson in the stomach. One of the teens was grazed in the back but not seriously injured.
Harris said both Harold Thompson and Higdon spent time at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.
In addition to DeKalb County Sheriff’s investigators, Ider officers, Drug Task Force agents and Jackson County investigators worked on the case. Harris said it was assigned to DeKalb investigator Mary Waters and presented at the most recent meeting of the grand jury.
