County to consider sales tax holiday

Published April 13, 2009

The DeKalb County Commission hopes to pass a resolution today for the annual sales tax holiday.

County Administrator Matt Sharp said the holiday is the first weekend in August, and if the resolution passes, consumers can reap the benefits of buying some items with no sales tax attached.

“It is a great thing because it gives people that are getting started with school a tax break,” Sharp said.

Sharp said the holiday will be good for anyone just looking for a break.

“It will definitely help a lot of folks and businesses,” Sharp said. “Especially this year with the way the economy is.”

Sharp said tax-exempt items include school supplies, clothing and computers.

The annual sales tax holiday is granted by the state of Alabama.

“They give authority to each county and the counties can decide if they want to participate in the holiday,” Sharp said. “[The county] either participates on the day specified by the state or they do not participate at all.”

The commission is also expected to:

• hear an update from the Sheriff’s Department.

• hear an update from the Road Department.

• discuss the SeniorRx Program.

• hear from attorney Charles Mauney on contracts for landfill monitoring, sales tax and the emergency mass notification system.

The commission meets today at 10 a.m. at the Activities Building in Fort Payne.
