BREAKING NEWS: Ider falls one run short

Published May 15, 2010

MONTGOMERY — Ider’s quest for a three-peat for ended with extra-inning heartbreak.

No. 2 Hatton pushed across the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning and hung on for a 2-1 victory over the No. 6 Lady Hornets in the Class 2A high school softball tournament “if-necessary” game at Lagoon Park.

The setback ended Ider’s two-year reign as the state champion. The Lady Hornets (41-23) were making their fourth appearance in the finals in the last five years. They won three titles in that span, claiming their first in 2006.

Both teams scored single runs in the third. Ider could have had more in that frame, but Hatton’s Hailey Blankenship made a running catch in deep center field to rob the Lady Hornets of two runs.

Ider’s Stephanie Swanson, Lynda Ring, Hayli Traylor and Taylor Keith made the all-tournament team.

The state championship was the first for Hatton (37-12-3) as a fastpitch team.
