Cities mixed on sales tax holiday
Published July 3, 2009
The annual state sales tax holiday will be here in about a month, and it will give consumers the chance to save money on clothing and back-to-school essentials.
The holiday, that will run Aug. 7-9, allows a shopper to buy certain clothing, school supplies and computers without paying required state sales tax.
As of July 1, Fort Payne, Ider, Rainsville, Sylvania and Valley Head have opted to participate in the holiday.
Geraldine and Hammondville have chosen not to participate and Collinsville, Crossville, Fyffe, Henagar, Mentone, Powell and Section have until Monday to decide if they will participate.
DeKalb Administrator Matt Sharp said he hopes the holiday will help during this economic time.
“It’s going to mean more this year to have the holiday because of the way the economy is right now,” Sharp said. “It will give consumers a break and hopefully, will help local businesses.”
Most cities and towns in DeKalb County say the tax-free weekend doesn’t affect the income to the respective area in a major way.
“It’s a little blip but not a major thing as far as overall sales tax,” Fort Payne Mayor Bill Jordan said.
Rainsville Mayor Donnie Chandler said Rainsville doesn’t see a significant decrease in income due to the holiday.
Ider Mayor Brad Hannah said doing for the residents of Ider is the main reason the town is partticipating.
“We do it mainly to help parents of children that are headed back to school,” Hannah said.
Jordan agreed with Hannah.
“It’s a plus to help children and parents, and we are delighted to do it really,” Jordan said. “I certainly believe it’s more important this year, where one or both parents have lost their jobs, I think it will give them a break and help our young people and parents, too.”
Jordan said he hopes everyone will take advantage of the sales tax holiday.
