Direct sales picking up in slow economy

Published June 19, 2009

Direct sales are filling up with representatives to bring in extra cash during the economic slowdown.

More people appear to be taking on a second job and even replacing lost jobs as representatives for Avon, Mary Kay and Tupperware.

June Brown, unit leader for District 1615, which covers DeKalb and other areas, said she has seen an increase in those wanting to jump in and sell direct.

“I’ve absolutely seen a large increase,” Brown said. “I’ve had four people from DeKalb County sign up in the last two weeks.”

Brown said the reason is simple.

“The [hosiery] mills are closing and more jobs are being lost and people are looking for ways to make money,” Brown said.

And, Brown said sellers are doing well.

“It’s very simple,” Brown said. “Avon sells itself.”

Mother and daughter team Carol Laney and Haley Travis love selling Avon and said the benefits are great.

“I’ve paid off a credit card and built a deck with the money I make from selling Avon,” Laney said.

Travis said her Avon salary is more on the conservative side, but said she is able to have extra money for groceries and gas.

There are also opportunities for bonuses in the business that can range from jewelry to bonuses and even cruises and cars.

“One of the benefits of selling Avon is the discounts,” Travis said. “I’m able to buy my makeup, shampoo and other beauty necessities at a great discount, which ends up saving me a lot of money.”

Laney said selling Avon is easy and anyone can do it.

“It’s only $10 to get a starter kit,” Laney said. “A seller can quit at any time if they don’t like it.”

In 2007, an estimated 15 million people were in direct sales nationwide.
