Fyffe has new leash law
Published June 29, 2009
Residents who live in Fyffe will now have to keep dogs properly restrained whether in an enclosure or on a leash.
Fyffe Mayor Katy Woodall said the most common complaint found in Fyffe is problems with dogs running loose or barking.
Woodall said since the ordinance went into affect on May 1, the town hall has received several complaints.
“We had a complaint right after the ordinance was passed,” Woodall said. “It involved a Rottweiler that chased a little girl to the mailbox. It didn’t bite her, but it knocked her down.”
Two Fyffe residents said the ordinance is a great idea.
“My neighbor can’t go to her garden without [her neighbor’s] dog barking,” Darlene Lanier said. “The dog barks all of the time and then the other dogs start barking.”
Rose Waddell said she and her family haven’t personally had any problems with animals but thinks the ordinance is good for the town.
“It’s a great idea,” Waddell said. “We do have a bunch of stray dogs running around. I’m proud they’ve started doing that here.”
The ordinance covers having animals running loose, barking or howling dogs, vicious dogs and violations of the ordinance.
Woodall said basically any owners of dogs have to ensure that if an animal is outside, it must be in an enclosure or chained up and the ordinance states the owner is responsible for notifying the public that a dog is loose inside the enclosure.
Woodall said anyone charged with an offense of violating the ordinance would be given a verbal warning for the first offense, $50 for the second, $100 for the third and $500 each additional violation.
Woodall said the case with barking dogs would be handled differently.
“Obviously, if we receive an excessive amount of calls about a dog, then we will go to the residence and give the owner a chance to fix the problem,” Woodall said. “If the owner doesn’t comply, they will be fined.”
Woodall said the DeKalb County Animal Shelter has the right to pick up any animal that is running loose in the city.
“We wanted to take proper measures to make sure no one is hurt,” Woodall said.
