Rainsville trying for new traffic light

Published April 7, 2009

Rainsville resident Linda Samples stood before the Rainsville City Council Monday to voice concern about a dangerous intersection and what she called a much-needed traffic light.

“We desperately need a traffic light at the intersection of Highway 75 and Marshall Road,” Samples said. “One of my employees was hit last week, and that’s not counting all the near hits I see every day.”

Samples, who owns S&S Wholesale, presented a petition with 1,460 signatures to the council.

“I think it’s needed,” Councilman David Shirey said. “I’m for anything that will make our city safer.”

Mayor Donnie Chandler said the city attorney would begin working on a resolution.

“We are going to pass a resolution to send to the highway department that we are interested in installing a traffic light at the intersection of Highway 75 and Marshall Road,” Chandler said. “It’s pretty dangerous. There’s a hill there, and it’s hard to see over the hill for cars turning on Marshall Road.”

Chandler said he feels like it would be safer and more convenient for everyone if we had a light there.

“We plan to have a resolution ready by the next meeting,” Chandler said. “The council will pass and send it on. Maybe we can get the wheels rolling. Hopefully, we can convince the highway department that one is needed up there.”

Chandler said it will be up to the state Department of Transportation to decide whether a light is needed.

“We had to pay half with the last one, which was $30,000,” Chandler said. “We have to maintain it and pay for the electricity that operates it.”

The council also:

• bought new chairs for the DeKalb County Courthouse Annex for $284.39.

• discussed plans for the city’s spring clean up effort.

• heard an update on the completion of the paving of a portion of Chavies Road.

• bought new umbrellas and tables for the city pool for $782.77.

• bought a new lawn mower specifically for the ball fields for $3,148.95.

• rescinded a letter of resignation previously submitted by Officer Rebecca Holcomb.
