Garbage exemptions up slightly
Published June 8, 2009
The DeKalb County Commission is expected to hear from Solid Waste Supervisor Rhonda Jackson about annual garbage exemptions available.
The service is offered to residents who live solely on Social Security or Social Security Disability.
“We have a total of 467 residents who will be receiving the free service this year,” Jackson said.
Jackson said this year’s total is slightly higher than last year.
“It’s not what we thought it would be,” Jackson said. “We expected it to be much higher.”
In all, 443 customers will be with Advanced Disposal, the company with which the county contracts, and 24 customers will have their garbage picked up by Powell workers.
“The county will pay the town of Powell for the customers that qualify who live in that area,” Jackson said.
Jackson said she sends applications out to those who are already on the service.
“Those already on the service will continue their service,” Jackson said. “Service starts July 1 for new customers.”
The commission is also expected to:
• hear a Road Department update.
• discuss a bid award for work on County Road 141.
• discuss a damage claim.
• hear from the Sheriff’s Office on travel and training.
• hear from Revenue Commissioner Martha Crye Ogle on property taxes.
The commission meets today at 10 a.m. at the Activities Building in Fort Payne.
