Get gardening tips from green thumbs

Published April 19, 2009

For those getting ready to start their spring gardens, DeKalb County Master Gardeners have it covered.

DeKalb County Master Gardeners Jay Rivett, Mimi Anderson and Harriet Turner will be at the Little River Canyon Hardware and Mercantile in Mentone on May 1 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“They will answer questions about your home garden,” said Les Rivett. “Plants and other garden supplies will be for sale.”

Jay Rivett is owner of Jay’s Garden Variety near Ider.

“At the farm, Jay and [I] grow a variety of produce, herbs and berries,” Les Rivett said. “You can find all of the usual seasonal vegetables and some of the unusual, including purple cauliflower, white egg plant, pimento, chili peppers and tomatillos.”

Les Rivett said Jay Rivett gives tours of their garden to show how herbs can be used as borders, how to plan a kitchen garden or what herbs to use to simply enjoy the smell.

Anderson will provide information about intercropping and companion planting for a happier garden.

“With her pest expertise, she can answer bug questions and offers many natural, no chemical ideas for garden[s],” Rivett said.

Turner, with her many years of flowering plant and shrubbery experience, will share her expertise on native, low water plants.

“She can answer pruning and transplanting questions and suggest the best plants for your needs,” Les Rivett said.

Door prize drawings will be held for those in attendance and there is no admission charge.
