GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Fort Payne wins
Published November 18, 2009
Fort Payne overcame a night of mixed results defensively to pull out a win in its season opener.
Conner Jordan and Alicia Williams scored 16 points apiece as the Fort Payne girls edged host Hazel Green 54-51 in high school basketball.
Fort Payne coach Steve Sparks, whose team reached the state semifinals last season, said the Lady Wildcats did a nice job trapping and defending the perimeter but hurt themselves with fouls.
“We fouled too much and put them on the free throw line a lot more than I would have liked, and we’re not going to be able to do that down the stretch in big games,” he said. “The first half, they shot 17 free throws, and we shot one. I just felt like we were doing a lot of playing defense with our hands, not moving our feet … not playing fundamental defense.”
Fort Payne led 23-17 at halftime, but Hazel Green rallied for a 32-31 lead after three periods. Hazel Green was 20 of 31 from the foul line. Fort Payne was 7 of 13.
Taylor Dean and Tori Edwards had nine points apiece for Fort Payne. Diamond Elston added six rebounds. Williams dished out four assists.
Chelsi Bryant led Hazel Green (0-3) with 14 points.
Sand Rock 53, Sylvania 49
At Sand Rock, Sagan Stiefel scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Rams in the season debut for both teams.
Lori Hitchcock and Hannah Haynes added 12 points apiece for Sylvania.
Sylvania led 13-10 after a quarter but trailed 30-20 at halftime and 41-34 after three periods.
N.S. Mountain 110, Valley Head 35
At Higdon, the Lady Bison broke the single-game state record for 3-pointers, knocking down 18.
The previous record was 17, set by Butler during the 1997-98 season. The 110 points was the fifth best for a girls’ team in state history.
Leading scorers for the Lady Bison (3-0) included Chelsea Ellison (six 3-pointers, 18 points), Chelsea Siniard (18 points), Lauren Cummins (four 3-pointers, 17 points), Lacy Huckabee (13 points) and Haley Cloud (three 3-pointers, 12 points).
Alley Hatfield scored 14 points for Valley Head (0-1), and Emerald Poe added 12.
Crossville 56, Collinsville 44
At Collinsville, Emily Peek led Crossville with 22 points and 14 points in the season opener for both squads.
Macey Simpson added 11 points for the Lady Lions.
Erica Osborn had 12 points and seven rebounds for Collinsville.
