Man dies in fire

Published November 27, 2009

A Painter man died in a log cabin fire Wednesday, according to DeKalb County investigators.

Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit Commander Wade Hill said it’s believed Bobby Johnson, 72, died in the fire.

“We are assuming that’s who he is until forensics positively identifies the body,” Hill said.

Geraldine, Crossville and Kilpatrick volunteer firefighters were first called to the blaze at the log cabin on Highway 75 in the Painter community at about 2:45 p.m. Authorities began searching for the homeowner after he couldn’t be located.

Sheriff’s investigators said firefighters found the man’s body near the back door of the home at around 5:30 p.m. They believe he was the only person in the home at the time the fire started.

Hill said state fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire, but there is no evidence of foul play at this time.
