Tax break coming
Published April 14, 2009
The DeKalb County Commission passed a resolution Tuesday to participate in the state’s fourth annual Sales Tax Holiday. It’s the fourth straight year the county has elected to give back-to-school shoppers a break.
The holiday, that will run Aug. 7-9, allows a shopper to buy certain clothing, school supplies and computers without paying required state sales and county sales tax.
County Administrator Matt Sharp said he hopes the holiday helps at a time so many need a break.
“It’s going to mean more this year to have the holiday because of the way the economy is right now,” Sharp said. “It will give consumers a break and hopefully will help local businesses.”
Sharp doesn’t expect a significant impact on county finances.
“It’s not enough really to count,” Sharp said. “So far, we’ve not noticed a big difference, and part of that is because everything is not tax exempt.”
Sharp thinks the holiday is a win-win for consumers and business owners.
“Shoppers are saving money on things that are tax exempt and because they are saving that money, they tend to buy other things that aren’t included in the holiday event,” Sharp said.
At its regular meeting Tuesday, the commission also:
• heard a Road Department update from Tom Broyles
• heard an update from DiAnne Callahan on the SeniorRx Program
• approved travel to a summer conference for probate office employees
• accepted contracts for Fyffe Landfill Monitoring, Sales Tax and the Emergency Mass Notification system
• approved a budget revision
• approved a resolution to declare areas affected by the recent tornadoes a disaster
• approved the following changes in personnel: hired Steve Bobbitt as part-time deputy replacing Craig Chandler; moved Josh Wigley from Federal Inmate fund transfer officer to Highway and traffic patrol officer; moved Bo Waldrop to replace Josh Wigley as the Federal Inmate fund transfer officer; hired Donald Morgan as corrections officer to replace Alma Cordova
• approved to reappoint Leon Spurgin to the North Jackson Water Authority
• appointed Paul Brandon to fill a vacancy on the Adamsburg Fire Department Board
