Several offices up for 2010 election
Published October 23, 2009
Next year is already shaping up to be an interesting election season for DeKalb County, with Fort Payne native Ron Sparks among the hopefuls for governor.
There are also a number of local races to be decided next year, including:
• DeKalb County sheriff, currently held by Jimmy Harris (D).
• DeKalb County district attorney, currently held by Mike O’Dell (D).
DeKalb County Commission president, currently held by Sid Holcomb (D). Holcomb has announced he will not seek re-election, and current District 1 Commissioner Ricky Harcrow, whose term is up in 2012, has said he would seek the position.
• DeKalb County Commission District 3, currently held by Chris Kuykendall (R). Gov. Bob Riley recently appointed Kuykendall to fill the remainder of the current term, after the death of incumbent Brant Craig in July. Kuykendall has said he would likely run for a full term in 2010.
• DeKalb County Commission District 4, currently held by Dewitt Jackson (D).
• DeKalb County Board of Education District 5, currently held by Terry Wooten (R).
• DeKalb County coroner, currently held by Tom Wilson (D).
U.S. legislators representing local districts are up for re-election, including Rep. Robert Aderholt (R) and Richard Shelby (R).
Several state legislative offices will also be decided in 2010, including Alabama State Senate District 8, currently held by Lowell Barron (D) and the following Alabama House of Representatives offices representing DeKalb County:
• District 24, currently held by Todd Greeson (R).
• District 26, currently held by Frank McDaniel (D).
• District 29, currently held by Jack Paige (D).
• District 39, currently held by Richard Lindsey (D).
In the governor’s race, Sparks is a hopeful for the Democratic nomination. U.S. Rep. Artur Davis is also seeking that nomination. There are several hopefuls for the Republican nomination for governor, including Tim James, Kay Ivey, Bradley Byrne, Roy Moore, Robert Bentley and Bill Johnson.
Gov. Bob Riley has served two terms and cannot run again.
