Fort Payne honors veterans, more events plann
Published November 9, 2009
Fort Payne City schools officials and high school students honored about 200 DeKalb County veterans Monday at an annual Veteran’s Day ceremony.
“It is with great pride that we honor those today who have served in our armed forces and to remember those who are currently serving and their families,” Fort Payne High School principal Ronnie Crabtree said. “Everything this country is, or hopes to be, can be directly attributed to our veteran community. The freedom we enjoy today is envied the world over, but it was attained with great personal sacrifice. Those sacrifices are still being made as we speak.”
Lt. Col. Richard White, of Albertville, was the guest speaker for the occasion.
“As you sleep in your bed, know that rough men stand ready in the night to defend your freedom,” White said.
White said 25 million veterans have fought in two world wars and seven foreign conflicts, as well as serving the U.S. in times of peace, to defend the nation’s freedom.
“Our nation values freedom not just for its people but for all,” White said. “All of those who have worn that uniform have won the hearts of the American people. What veterans have given us is a debt we will never be able to repay.”
Veteran’s Day ceremonies continue today with Geraldine’s 35th annual celebration at 10 a.m. at the school gym. A Veteran’s Day ceremony will also be at Henagar Junior High School at 1 p.m.
