Tennis roundup: Fort Payne takes fifth
Published April 23, 2009
Fort Payne failed to qualify for the state high school tennis tournament, but the Wildcats still closed their season on a strong note Tuesday.
Fort Payne placed three individuals and two doubles teams in the semifinals and claimed fifth place in the boys’ Class 5A, Section 4 Tournament at Boaz.
Cullman finished with 52 points and won the section title. Albertville closed with 46 and took second. Both will advance to the state tournament. Fort Payne scored 14 points in the eight-team competition.
The Cats didn’t score in last year’s tournament.
“After last year, getting put out in the first round, it was great,” Fort Payne coach Chris Bible said of his team’s performance. “It just shows that we’re improving. I feel like we played some of the best tennis we’ve played all year. Once you get to sectionals, it has to be that way.”
Fort Payne’s Manny Herrera defeated an opponent from Madison Academy 10-7 in the first round at No. 1 singles before falling to Albertville in a semifinal.
Teammate Jerad Watson downed Arab 10-5 at No. 4 before dropping a semifinal match to Cullman. It was a similar story for Fort Payne’s Jake White, who downed Southside 10-4 in the first round at No. 6 before falling to Cullman.
In doubles, White and Watson won 10-3 against Boaz at No. 2 before dropping a semifinal match to Cullman. Fort Payne’s Gerrardo Carrillo and Reed Whittaker took a first-round match against Arab 10-1 at No. 3 and got beat by Albertville the semifinals.

Madison Johnson (10-8 over Ramsay at No. 3), Casey Miller (10-1 over Ramsay at No. 5) and Cassidy Hood (10-2 over Ramsay at No. 6) picked up singles wins for Plainview before falling in the next round.
Johnson and Taylor Pack picked up a 10-2 victory over Ramsay at No. 2 doubles, and Miller and Hood downed Ramsay 10-0 at No. 3 doubles. Both Plainview duos fell in the next round.
Taylor Horton provided the top highlight for the Plainview boys, downing Oneonta 6-3, 6-4 to reach the title match at No. 2 singles, where he fell to Jacksonville.
Edwardo DeSouza (10-8 over Ramsay at No. 1), Jacob Malone (10-0 over Ramsay at No. 3) and Cole Wagner (10-0 over Ramsay at No. 5) claimed one singles victory apiece for the Bears.
